When you first get to the home page of Starfall, there’s the grade level options so your child can pick activities that best suit your child’s learning level. But the deeper you go into what they offer, prepare to be somewhat overwhelmed. A PEEK INSIDEĪt first glance, this site just seems like a cute place for your child to play games and have fun while conveniently learning things. There are other membership options for small educational groups, classes, and schools as well. This will give you access both to the website and mobile apps. The cost is only $35 US / year for a household. (Plus some that cost a dollar or two if you want some other ones.)Ī full membership to Starfall, however, gives you access to everything available on the website. There are learning to read apps available for both Android, Apple, and Kindle Fire that are free, too. My kids did this for several years – usually when I wanted to test out the longevity of their interest in the program. Anything your child doesn’t have access to is simply grayed out. Most of the games are available as well plus lots of the music and such. If you decide not to get a membership, your child can access the main bulk of the website- all the learn to read materials for kindergarten and grade 1 especially. Today, it not only covers learning to read but also math and more for Pre-K /Kindergarten and content in both math and English for grades 1 – 5! HOW MUCH IT COSTS Since then, it has expanded to include so much more. The designer of the program struggled with dyslexia and learning to read as a child, so he wanted to create a way to make reading more interactive and engaging to help all kids excel with their efforts to learn reading. Starfall is publically-funded non-profit educational program which was originally launched in 2002 as a reading program for young children. Find out more, try it free, or register for a membership at.HOW STARFALL CAN HELP YOUR CHILD LOVE LEARNING.I don't use it on any of my students above 1st grade as the content even on the higher "know how to read" can be too juvenile. It teaches some basic skills using technology to enhance and not be bells and whistles. The flash videos are engaging and the begging reading section has some great beginning sound exercises. It is now something my almost 4 year old asks to do with me. I then showed it to my four year old and he loved it. I started using this with my kindergarteners to help them with some mouse control excercises while at the same time learning something. My 3-yr-old is starting to write and recognize short words. The content reinforces the letter recognition, phonics & reading skills I am trying to teach them. My boys, now almost 4 & 6 have been playing games on this site for several years now. Website you and your kids will love! I love that Starfall* is free and easy for small children to navigate.I would highly recommend to anyone with 4-6 year old children. The recommend literature books were at my local library which was great also. I did buy several of the books such as the animal kingdom collection. I loved that with a membership all the lesson plans & songs we downloadable and gave access to more games and readers via the website. He loves reading now and the vocabulary words have broaden how he describes things. He loved the the website especially, and couldn't wait to have computer free on the website on Fridays. It has the potential to become too time consuming for the classroom, but seems to be very successful at home. This is program is great for home use and possibly even group work in school. While this piece of software is extremely useful and helpful for children learning to read, it’s debatable as to whether or not this software is truly suited for the classroom.
